Phone sex takes on a new meaning!

The Showmanator’s heard everything now! According to a just released study by Harris Interactive, around 9% of American adults admitted to using a smartphone while have sex with their partner. Believe it or not in the 18 to 34 group the number increased to 20%. 20%!!!

Hopefully that got your attention! Spurious or not, it seemed impossible not to comment on that statistic, but it does kind of underline the point about the increasing (and increasingly unusual) uptake of smartphones. Leaving aside the implications for personal relationships, smartphones are certainly life changers. In fact, one Samsung ad talks about one of their phones being your ‘life companion’. Personally I’d prefer my life companion to be human or, at the very least a companionly lovable animal like a dog or a cat, even a budgie, buy hey, each to his or her own.

If I had a $ for every event organiser who said my audiences aren’t big smartphone users — they’re too old, too young, not geeky enough, too geeky (want more challenge than), mostly women, technologically challenged — so there’s no point in having an event app, this column would be a thing of the past!

For sure, smartphones aren’t for everyone, but anyone who regularly attends events must have their heads buried deep in the sand if they aren’t seeing the evidence all around them: a lot of people of all types are wandering around lovingly clutching at least one smart device.

This is demonstrably not limited to the aforementioned Gens X and Y … or men … or Geeks. Smartphone use cuts across age and ethnicities and wealth stratas. Smartphones don’t acknowledge ‘isms’. In fact, smartphone producers are now beginning wise up to the different needs of different user groups. There are several who are now making smartphones with features designed primarily for older people who may have limited experience with modern gadgetry or simply want something that has large fonts, clearly marked icons and doesn’t give them a headache trying to decipher small hieroglyphs masquerading as text.

Voice dialling is also a helpful feature … as are mediation reminders (Android Jitterbug Touch by Greatcall Wireless), a 5Star personal security service and / or access to a live nurse service to answer health questions and so on.

Anyway, I’m sure none of this is news. But, all joking aside, it does reinforce the message that smartphones are spreading throughout society, not only to the tech-savvy, real-time fixated business community, so check your premises if you still believe your audience isn’t ready for an event app.
